Saint-Paul – Between Earth and Light
Some images are born long before they are ever photographed.
I had carried this view of Saint-Paul in my mind for many years.
But distance, time, and life kept postponing the moment when I could finally return to the island to photograph it.I came back several times before finding a light capable of expressing what this place truly means to me.
Saint-Paul is more than a city.
It is a place filled with memory.
A landscape deeply connected to my childhood. From these heights, the gaze moves across far more than a simple landscape.
It finds fragments of a life once lived.
My family’s homes.
My school.
The former workplace of my father.Every light within the city seems to carry something familiar.
A quiet memory.
A presence that continues to exist despite the passing of time.Through this image, I was not simply trying to photograph Saint-Paul.
I was trying to preserve the invisible connection that still binds me to the city where I grew up.Some cities continue to live within us long after we have left them behind.
This photographic artwork explores the relationship between memory, territory, and belonging.
Through the lights of Saint-Paul, the landscapes of the west coast, and the depth of the Réunion night, the image seeks less to represent the city than to preserve what it evokes: memories, landmarks, and fragments of life that continue to inhabit a place long after childhood has passed.
