Grand Galet
When I arrived at Grand Galet, I immediately understood why this place is considered one of the most beautiful on Réunion Island.
First, there is the sound.
The sound of water falling relentlessly, striking the rocks and gathering in the pools below. A constant rumble, mixed with the quiet rush of the river and the rustling of the surrounding vegetation.
Then there is the damp air, the fine mist settling on your face, and the coolness of the spray against the warmth of the highlands above Saint-Joseph.
Standing there, the mountain almost disappears behind the water.
Waterfalls cascade down the rock face, some delicate and threadlike, others more powerful, all flowing toward the Langevin River in a constant, restless movement.
You feel small in front of all that rock, water, and vegetation.
That was probably what struck me most.
But when I sent my drone higher, I discovered another dimension of Grand Galet.
From above, the view finally pulls away from the waterfall itself and reveals the landscape as a whole. The countless cascades appear like branches of the same river, the Langevin River winds through the vegetation, and the surrounding mountains take on an almost dizzying scale.
What you feel standing at the foot of the waterfall suddenly becomes visible in its entirety.
The power.
The abundance.
The sense that water has shaped this entire valley.
We were there during a period of drought, when the flow was considerably lower than it can be after heavy rainfall. Even so, Grand Galet already had an incredible presence.
I found myself imagining what this landscape must look like when the rains swell the river and every waterfall comes alive with its full force.
That is the feeling I wanted to preserve in this photograph.
Not simply the image of a waterfall, but the memory of standing before something so much larger than yourself.
A landscape you hear before you even look at it.
A landscape you can feel on your skin.
And one that, for a few moments, makes you stop and simply take it all in.
This fine art photograph seeks to capture the experience of Grand Galet as much as its beauty.
Seen from above, the waterfall reveals a dimension that is difficult to perceive from the ground. Water, rock, and vegetation come together to form an immense landscape, while human presence becomes almost insignificant.
Photographed during a period of drought, the image shows a lower flow than can be seen after periods of heavy rainfall. Even under these conditions, the power and beauty of the place remain unmistakable.
This photograph is an invitation to reconnect with that feeling of scale — the sensation of standing before a living landscape shaped by water, and experiencing it not only with your eyes, but with your entire body.
