Frontenac Silences – Episode IV

 

At certain moments, silence feels heavier.

The light slowly fades as clouds gather above the river.
The château gradually begins to glow, like a presence emerging from the shadows.
In front of it, the old cannon rests in the snow, a motionless witness to another era.

There is a quiet tension within this scene.
A contrast between the warmth of illuminated windows and the cold weight of the sky.
Between stone, snow, and the mist drifting along the base of the fortifications.

Past and present coexist without sound.

Nothing about this image was forced.
I simply chose to step back slightly to allow the cannon into the frame.
To wait for the lights to find their balance against the dark sky.
To let the atmosphere settle on its own.

These are the moments when a place begins to reveal something else.
Less the city awakening,
more the memory it still carries.

Photographing here is not simply about capturing a monument.
It is about observing what remains, despite the passage of time.

Part of the Frontenac Silences series, this artwork explores those moments when light, cold, and architecture transform Québec into an almost timeless landscape.

Through the contrasts of the winter sky, the château’s glowing lights, and the silent presence of the fortifications, the series seeks less to document the city than to preserve what it occasionally reveals in the stillness of the early hours.
A quiet memory of place, shaped by history, silence, and light.
