Before the Vastness

Before the Vastness

Some landscapes leave an imprint on our memory long before the shutter is released.

In late summer 2025, a brief journey brought me to the coast of Normandy. A simple trip, shared with family members I had not seen in a long time. Moments like these are rare. They pass quickly. Often too quickly. Yet their presence lingers long after the journey itself has ended.

When the cliffs of Étretat first appeared on the horizon, I immediately understood why this place has captured the imagination of generations of travelers. Towering walls of chalk seemed to rise from the sea like sculptures shaped by time itself. Every layer held a story. Every contour bore the marks of centuries of wind, rain, and tides.

I wished I could have stayed longer. Returned at dawn. Waited for the evening light. Watched the shadows stretch across the cliffs and the sea shift in color as the hours passed. But sometimes time slips away from us. We can only embrace the moment as it is offered.

So I stopped.

I set aside the pursuit of perfect light and simply allowed myself to be present. To feel the place. To listen to the wind. To take in the vastness before me.

Standing before these cliffs, as before so many landscapes shaped by nature, one is reminded of their true scale. We feel small, yet strangely at peace. As though such beauty exists to remind us that the world is infinitely larger than the concerns we carry with us each day.

This photograph was born from that moment.

A moment shared between family, travel, and wonder. A memory of Étretat, certainly, but above all the memory of encountering a place that invites us to slow down, to look more carefully, and to truly feel.

Because landscape photography is not simply about capturing a scene.

It is about pausing long enough to be changed by it.

This photographic artwork explores the relationship between time, memory, and landscape. Sculpted by the elements over millennia, the cliffs of Étretat become a symbol of enduring presence, connecting generations and inviting us to rediscover a slower, more attentive way of experiencing the world around us.
