Sheltered by the Forest

t was barely 5 a.m.

 

I had just returned to Québec after several weeks on my island, Réunion. Jet lag had pulled me out of bed a little earlier than usual. And yet, I’m already an early riser.

 

Rather than fight the sleep, I grabbed my camera and drone and headed out.

 

A few minutes later, I found myself in a park in Saint-Georges, a place I know quite well.

 

But that morning, something felt different.

 

The forest was still immersed in the quiet of early morning. The air was cool and damp. The scents of earth, leaves, and wet wood slowly brought me back to an environment I had been away from for several weeks.

 

After spending time surrounded by the landscapes of Réunion, I was rediscovering those of Québec.

 

Differently.

More quietly.

I took my time walking, listening, and reconnecting with the sounds of the forest before the day truly began.

 

Then I saw the bridge.

 

From ground level, it almost disappeared into the vegetation. Mist hovered above the trees, gradually softening and obscuring the edges of the forest.

 

I didn’t launch the drone right away.

I simply took in the moment.

Then I decided to gain a little altitude.

 

And suddenly, the park I thought I knew looked completely different.

 

From above, the bridge crossed the forest like a thin line, almost fragile against the vast expanse of vegetation.

 

The mist seemed to shield the landscape from view.

The trees formed an immense canopy around the bridge, as though the forest had slowly reclaimed it and drawn it back into its protection.

 

The higher I climbed, the smaller I felt.

And, paradoxically, the more at home I felt.

 

After several weeks spent exploring the spectacular landscapes of Réunion, that morning reminded me that wonder does not always depend on the grandeur of a landscape.

 

Sometimes, all it takes is seeing a place you think you know from a different perspective.

 

This photograph was born from that reconnection.

With Québec.

With a forest I love.

With those simple sensations we sometimes forget when our days move too quickly.

The coolness on my face.

The scent of damp earth.

The rustling of leaves.

The almost complete silence of a park before the first walkers arrive.

 

And the mist that seemed to envelop everything.

For a few moments, the world still seemed asleep.

There was only the forest, the bridge, and the soft light of early morning.

Like a refuge.

 

A place where you can simply stop, breathe, and let nature surround you.

Seen from above, the human presence becomes almost abstract. The bridge, despite being built by people, appears tiny against the vastness of the surrounding vegetation.

The mist reinforces the feeling of solitude and transforms a familiar place into something almost timeless.

This photograph was born from a very simple moment: after a long journey, I went back for a walk through a forest I already knew, only to rediscover it from an entirely different perspective.

A reminder that sometimes, you don’t have to travel far to find that feeling of escape.
