Between Rain and Light

“Some places remain forever tied to those with whom we first discovered them.”

In 2014, this photograph emerged during a journey across Réunion Island shared with my closest friend. We travelled without a fixed route, letting the landscape guide us between volcanic terrain, coastal roads and the hidden basins of the south.

In the heart of Langevin, Trou Noir revealed itself through an atmosphere both unstable and unpredictable. Rain would arrive and disappear without warning, sunlight briefly filtering through the vegetation before dissolving into mist. The landscape shifted constantly, as though resisting capture.

Between Rain and Light was born from this waiting.

It required patience, observation and many attempts. Each variation transformed the water, the rocks and the forest, allowing the place to move from one presence to another. Gradually, these fragile elements found their balance, revealing a moment nature never offers in quite the same way twice.

Beyond the photograph itself, what remains most vividly is the memory of a suspended moment. One shaped by friendship, exploration and the quiet silence shared before the understated power of the island. Some landscapes stay with us because of their beauty. Others endure because they also carry the memory of those who walked beside us.

This photographic work explores the meeting of shifting light, water and memory. More than a landscape, it preserves the trace of a lived moment where changing nature and human presence meet within the same quiet breath.
