A practical guide to choosing between luster and fine art prints

When ordering a photographic print, the choice of paper finish often comes last, almost as an afterthought. Yet it is one of the factors that most profoundly shapes the way an image is experienced once it is printed.

Paper is more than a surface. It determines how light interacts with a photograph. The same image printed on two different papers can tell a slightly different story.

I have chosen to offer two finishes, each designed for a specific purpose: luster, vibrant and contrast-rich, and fine art matte, timeless and refined. Here’s how they differ, and how to choose the one that will best serve your image.

Luster Paper: Bright, Dynamic, and Full of Presence

Rich, vibrant, and visually engaging.

Luster paper features a subtle sheen and a fine texture that can be felt to the touch. It delivers deep blacks, vivid colours, and exceptional detail. Images printed on luster paper immediately command attention, with strong contrast and colours that feel almost alive.

Its only trade-off is that it may produce slight reflections depending on the lighting angle. In most interiors this is rarely an issue, but it is worth considering if the print will hang directly opposite a window or a strong light source.

Ideal for: high-contrast landscapes, black-and-white photography, night scenes, and forest images with dramatic light. In short, any photograph that benefits from deep blacks and rich colour.

This is the standard finish offered for my photographic prints: a beautiful, accessible presentation that enhances the image without complication. For many photographs, it is simply the right choice.

Fine Art Matte Paper: Timeless Museum Quality

Refined, textured, and made to last.

Fine art matte paper belongs in a category of its own. Made from cotton and natural fibres, acid-free, and produced by renowned paper mills such as Hahnemühle, it offers a soft, lightly textured surface that eliminates reflections entirely, regardless of lighting conditions.

This paper allows archival pigment inks to be absorbed deep within the fibres, creating a richness and subtlety that conventional photo papers cannot replicate. Blacks remain deep without appearing harsh, while highlights stay luminous without sacrificing detail. The image feels integrated into the paper itself rather than resting on its surface.

It is also the choice for longevity. When properly cared for, a fine art cotton print is designed to preserve its beauty for decades with minimal colour shift. This is what is often referred to as museum-quality permanence. It is the paper I reserve for my most demanding editions.

Ideal for: nature photography, artistic series, and works intended for framing and display. In essence, any image that deserves to be treated as a work of art in its own right.

If luster paper enhances an image, fine art paper transforms it into an art object. It represents the highest level of presentation for those seeking the finest rendering and archival longevity.

Regardless of the finish you choose, every print is produced on demand using professional archival pigment inks, far more stable over time than consumer-grade alternatives.

Nothing is mass-produced. Each print is created specifically for you, carefully inspected, and packaged in rigid protective materials to ensure it arrives safely.

Which One Should You Choose?

There is no wrong choice, only the finish that best suits a particular image and space.

If your photograph features strong contrast, deep blacks, and you want maximum visual impact, luster is an excellent option.

If you are looking for a print that feels like a true artwork, free from reflections and created to endure for generations, fine art matte is the natural choice.

If you’re unsure, consider where the piece will be displayed. A brightly lit wall or a room with large windows often benefits from the reflection-free qualities of fine art paper, while softer lighting allows luster paper to showcase its full depth and contrast.
