How to Choose Your First Camera: The Complete Beginner's Guide

I am a photographer, and I am going to start by telling you something that works against the trade in general: the camera matters far less than the advertising leads you to believe. I have used the same body since 2019 and I have no plans to replace it. What changed in between were the lenses, and my photographs got better. You are not buying better photographs. You are buying a tool that will let you make them, once you know how to use it.

You do still need one. And faced with a spec sheet talking about APS-C sensors, five-axis stabilisation and twenty frames per second, nothing tells you whether that particular camera will suit you.

This article is written for someone starting from nothing. No technical word is assumed: every term followed by an asterisk is explained at the foot of the section where it appears. And no specific model is recommended, deliberately, because cameras are replaced every two years while the principles do not. By the end you will be able to decide on your own, including five years from now.

Do you actually need a camera?

Let's begin with the question no salesperson will ask you.

A recent phone does a great many things well that were difficult ten years ago. It exposes correctly in most situations, it merges several frames in a fraction of a second to rescue contrast, and it fits in a pocket, which is the first requirement of any photograph: being there at the right moment.

If you mostly photograph the people around you, your meals and your travels, and you look at those images on a screen, your phone is probably enough. You will improve faster by learning to compose your images than by changing equipment.

I say that from experience. I sometimes photograph with nothing but my phone, because I do not always go out with my camera. The best camera is still the one you have on you, and an image made with a phone will always beat a moment you missed.

A dedicated camera becomes useful when you run into one of these limits.

Low light. A concert hall, a church, an interior in the evening, the northern lights. A phone's small sensor* lacks the surface area to gather light, and it compensates with software processing that eventually shows: smoothing, drawn-in edges, approximate colour.

Distance. A bird, a player on a pitch, an architectural detail high on a building. A phone's zoom is largely a crop*. A real telephoto* lens brings the subject closer optically, which is an entirely different thing.

Background blur*. Portrait mode simulates that separation by calculation, and you have almost certainly seen it fail: a strand of hair cut out, the arm of a pair of glasses blurred by mistake. A larger sensor and a fast* lens* produce that effect for real.

Large prints. If you want to print big, the difference shows. A heavily processed phone file rarely holds up to enlargement the way a camera file does.

Control. This is the real reason, and the one that moves most people. You want to decide what the camera does instead of putting up with it, and to understand why an image works. A dedicated camera puts those decisions under your fingers instead of burying them in menus. We will see exactly which ones further on.

If none of those five limits applies to you today, keep your phone and come back to this article the day one of them does. That is not modesty, it is the best possible use of your money.

The words in this section

The sensor*. The small light-sensitive electronic surface hidden inside the camera. It is what records the image. It replaced the film of older cameras, and its physical size is one of the main differences between two cameras.

The lens*. The tube of glass elements that attaches to the front of the camera. It projects the image onto the sensor. On some cameras it can be swapped, on others it is fixed to the body.

A fast lens*. You will read this expression often. It has nothing to do with speed of operation: it means the lens lets in a lot of light. That is what allows you to photograph in the dark and to get a blurred background.

A telephoto*. A lens that sees far and narrow, like binoculars, bringing distant subjects closer. Its opposite is the wide angle, which sees broadly and fits a lot into the frame. A zoom is simply a lens that moves between the two.

Background blur*. The effect that separates a sharp subject from a soft background. Its technical name is depth of field, meaning the slice of the scene that appears sharp from front to back. When that slice is very thin, the background dissolves.

A crop*. Cutting the edges off an image afterwards, on a computer, to tighten in on the subject.

What actually determines the quality of an image

Before comparing cameras, you need to know what you are comparing. Four things account for almost everything, and they are not in the order you would expect.

1. The light

This is the number one factor, and it cannot be bought. The same scene photographed at midday and an hour before sunset gives you two unrelated images, with any camera. No body* rescues bad light, and beautiful light rescues a modest body.

2. The photographer

The framing, the moment, the distance to your subject, what you choose to leave outside the frame. This is what separates two photographs taken in the same place with the same equipment. And unlike equipment, it can be learned: that is exactly what my course is about.

3. The lens

It forms the image before the sensor ever records it. A good lens on an average body beats a mediocre lens on an excellent body. We will come back to this in detail, because it is the most underestimated point in any camera purchase.

4. The size of the sensor

It comes fourth, and yet it is the first number salespeople put in front of you. A larger sensor gathers more light, which helps in the dark and makes background blur easier. That is real, but it is nowhere near decisive if the three points above are not under control.

And what barely matters at all: megapixels

I believed it too. When I started out I was convinced that a high megapixel count guaranteed a good image, and it was the first number I compared.

This is the most widespread misunderstanding. Megapixels measure resolution, which is to say the size of the image in dots. They do not measure quality.

For a sense of scale: twenty-four megapixels prints very well at large sizes. Beyond that, what you mainly gain is cropping room and heavier files to store.

Two twenty-four megapixel cameras can produce very different images depending on sensor size and lens quality. The number on its own tells you nothing.

The words in this section

The body*. The camera itself, without a lens. It holds the sensor, the electronics, the screen and the controls. When someone says a camera is expensive, they almost always mean the body alone.

What you will decide yourself

This is where the difference lies between putting up with your camera and using it. Four settings, plus one decision. They will come back throughout the rest of this article, and in every spec sheet you read.

Exposure*. The amount of light the sensor receives. An image that is too dark is underexposed, one that is too bright is overexposed. The three settings below exist only to control it, each in its own way and with its own trade-off.

Aperture*. The size of the opening that lets light into the lens. It is written as f followed by a number, for example f/1.8. The smaller the number, the wider the opening and the more light gets through. It is counter-intuitive, and that is simply how it is. Remember that f/1.8 is a wide aperture and f/16 a narrow one. It also governs background blur: wide opening, soft background.

Shutter speed. How long the shutter*, the small curtain sitting in front of the sensor, lets light through. One two-hundredth of a second, for example. A fast speed freezes motion, a slow one lets it blur. It decides whether a waterfall becomes a veil of silk or stays water splashing.

Sensitivity, or ISO*. The setting that amplifies the sensor's signal when there is not enough light. Raising it lets you shoot in the dark, at the cost of grain appearing in the image.

And a fifth, which is not a dose of light but is decided just as deliberately.

Focus*. The act of making the subject you are aiming at sharp. The camera does it by itself in most cases, which is called autofocus. You can also do it by hand, which is called manual focus.

These five words will come back in every spec sheet you read. You do not need to know how to handle them today, only to know what is being talked about.

The words in this section

The shutter*. The small mechanical curtain that opens and closes in front of the sensor when you press the button. It is what makes the characteristic clack. It is a wearing part, and the number of times it has opened is counted, which will matter when buying used.

The main types of camera

The compact

A pocket body with a lens fixed to it, not interchangeable.

Who it suits: someone who wants better than a phone without carrying anything more.

What you gain: discretion, low weight, sometimes a useful zoom.

What you give up: the ability to change lenses, and therefore to grow. Be careful, the category is very broad. Some compacts have a sensor barely larger than a phone's, which makes them of limited interest today. Others, often called premium or enthusiast compacts, have a much larger sensor and a fast lens, and they make excellent cameras to learn on.

The bridge

A body that looks like a large camera, with an enormous built-in zoom that cannot be removed.

Who it suits: someone who wants a very long zoom, for photographing animals or sport from the stands, without buying several lenses.

What you gain: a zoom range no other format will give you at that price.

What you give up: the sensor is usually small, which limits you in low light. And the lens becomes dim at the long end of the zoom, precisely where you need it most.

The mirrorless camera

A body with interchangeable lenses and no mirror inside.

A word of explanation, because that name means nothing until you know which mirror is missing. For fifty years, serious cameras contained an angled mirror that bounced the image from the lens up into a viewfinder*, then flipped up at the moment of exposure to let the light reach the film or sensor. That mechanism is what makes the characteristic clack. Mirrorless cameras removed it: the sensor receives light continuously, and the viewfinder became a small screen showing the image as it will be recorded.

Everything that follows, good and bad, comes from that one change.

Who it suits: the large majority of beginners buying new today.

What you gain: relative compactness, a viewfinder that shows you the effect of your settings before you press the shutter, generally excellent autofocus, and access to a catalogue of lenses.

What you give up: battery life, because the viewfinder and screen draw power constantly. Plan on a second battery.

The DSLR

A body with interchangeable lenses, a mirror, and an optical viewfinder: you see the scene directly through the lens, not an electronic rendering of it.

Who it suits: someone buying used on a tight budget, or someone who prefers an optical viewfinder.

What you gain: a viewfinder that shows no delay and no pixels at all, since you are looking at the real scene, often far better battery life, a body large enough to hold comfortably, and above all a deep and inexpensive second-hand market.

What you give up: weight, bulk, and the future. That is the next section.

The words in this section

The viewfinder*. The small window you put your eye to in order to frame, as opposed to the rear screen you hold at arm's length. On a DSLR it is optical, you see the real scene through the lens. On a mirrorless camera it is a tiny screen showing the image as it will be recorded.

New mirrorless or used DSLR: the real question today

The market has shifted, and you should know it before you buy.

Every manufacturer except Pentax has stopped developing new DSLRs and has moved its research to mirrorless. Mirrorless cameras now account for roughly five times the sales of DSLRs.

This does not mean a DSLR is a bad camera. A good DSLR bought eight years ago still makes excellent photographs, and it will still make them in ten years. The physics has not changed.

It means two practical things.

If you buy new, buy mirrorless. You are investing in a system that will keep being developed, with new lenses and long-term support.

If your budget is tight, a used DSLR remains a remarkable way in. The shift in the market has driven down the price of bodies and lenses that were out of reach a few years ago. For learning the handful of things that genuinely matter, a used DSLR is perfect, and it leaves you money for a good lens.

So the question is not which is better. It is: do I want to invest in a system for the next decade, or do I want the best possible learning tool for a given budget?

Sensor sizes, explained plainly

These four names are simply physical sensor sizes. They are not brands and not quality grades, just dimensions, the way you would talk about paper sizes. The names are inherited from technical history and follow no obvious logic: don't try to make sense of them, just remember the order.

From smallest to largest:

One-inch type. Around 13mm by 9mm, roughly four times the surface of a phone sensor. Found in premium compacts and some bridge cameras. A clear step up from a phone, in a genuinely portable package.

Micro Four Thirds. Around 17mm by 13mm, roughly double the previous one. Its main advantage is lens size: the lenses stay small and light. An excellent compromise if you walk a lot.

APS-C. Around 23mm by 15mm. The name comes from a 1990s film format and tells you nothing useful. It is the most common format in entry-level and mid-range cameras, the best balance of quality, price and bulk, and it is very probably where you should be looking.

Full frame. Around 36mm by 24mm, which is exactly the size of one frame on the film people bought before digital. Roughly 2.3 times the surface of APS-C. Better low-light performance, background blur easier to achieve. Also: more expensive bodies, more expensive lenses, larger and heavier.

To picture it: a full-frame sensor fits inside a postage stamp, a phone sensor inside a match head. Everything is decided within that gap.

A word of honesty about full frame. It is presented as the destination, and many beginners save up to go straight there. It is almost always a mistake. A full-frame body with a cheap lens gives worse results than an APS-C body with a good lens, at a higher price and with a heavier bag. Sensor size never compensates for a poor lens.

The lens matters more than the body

This is the advice that makes the biggest difference to a first photograph, and the one people follow least. It is also what moved my own images forward.

What the kit lens really is

When you buy a camera with interchangeable lenses, it often comes with an entry-level zoom. That lens is decent, versatile, and it lets you start. It has two weaknesses: it is not very bright, and it renders the edges of the image less sharply than the centre.

This is not a trick, it is a reasonable starting point. But understand that it is the lens, not the body, that will limit your images first.

How bright a lens is

You will see numbers like f/1.8, f/2.8, f/3.5-5.6. They give the maximum aperture, meaning how much light the lens lets through. The smaller the number, the brighter the lens.

A bright lens gives you two things: the ability to photograph in the dark without degrading the image, and more pronounced background blur.

The "3.5-5.6" you will see on kit zooms means the brightness drops as you zoom in. That is the main limitation of those lenses.

Start versatile, specialise later

You will often be told to buy a fast prime straight away, meaning a lens with a single fixed focal length*. I disagree, and here is why.

A prime does not zoom. It forces you to move instead of turning a ring*, which is an excellent exercise, and it locks you into one framing, which is a poor way to begin. Until you know what you like photographing, you cannot know which focal length will serve you. Buy a 50mm and discover three months later that you love birds, and you have bought the wrong lens.

So start with a versatile zoom, and the kit one will do. Its job is not to make your best images, it is to let you try everything: landscape, portrait, street, detail. Within a few months you will find out what you keep coming back to without thinking.

Then let your files answer you. Your camera records the focal length used in every photograph. After a few hundred images, look at the ones you prefer and at what focal length they were taken. You will have a number, not a hunch.

That is when a fast prime earns its price, because you will know which one to buy. It will be brighter and cheaper than a zoom of equal quality, and then, yes, it will transform your images.

I shoot with primes myself these days. And I am thinking of going back to a versatile zoom. It is not a hierarchy, it is a round trip.

Which focal length

Without getting into numbers, hold on to the principle. A short focal length widens the field and suits landscapes and interiors. A long focal length compresses and brings distant subjects closer, and suits portraits and wildlife. Between them sit the standard focal lengths, close to what the eye sees, which suit almost everything. That is usually the range covered by the zoom sold with the camera, and it is a perfectly good place to begin.

The words in this section

Focal length*. The number in millimetres written on the lens, for example 35mm or 200mm, telling you where you sit between wide angle and telephoto. A small number sees wide, a large number sees far.

A ring*. The band you turn on the lens itself, to zoom or to focus by hand.

You are not buying a body, you are joining a system

This is the most important point in the long run and the least visible at the moment of purchase.

Each brand has its own mount, its own way of attaching lenses. A lens from one brand will not fit another brand's body, short of adapters and compromises.

In practice: the day you change bodies, you keep your lenses only if you stay in the same family. And since lenses last far longer than bodies, often fifteen or twenty years, it is the system you are choosing, not the camera.

Before you buy, ask yourself these questions.

Does this brand offer affordable lenses in the focal lengths I care about? Is there a deep second-hand market for this mount? Do independent manufacturers make compatible lenses, which keeps prices down?

Every major brand makes excellent cameras today. What separates them is the lens catalogue, the prices, and the handling, not image quality.

What to look for on a spec sheet

What matters for learning

Dials* and buttons. This is the most overlooked criterion and one of the most useful. A camera with two physical dials lets you change shutter speed and aperture without taking your eye from the viewfinder. A camera that buries those settings in a touchscreen menu will discourage you from ever leaving automatic mode. If you are buying a camera in order to learn, buy one that keeps the controls within reach.

A viewfinder. Looking through a viewfinder, camera against your face, steadies the shot and cuts you off from your surroundings. Some entry-level models have none and rely on the rear screen. That works, but it is less comfortable in sunlight and less stable.

A tilting screen. Useful for shooting at ground level or above your head, two angles that immediately make images more interesting.

Stabilisation. It compensates for the shake in your hands and lets you shoot longer without blur. It can be in the body or in the lens. A real comfort, without being essential for learning.

Autofocus. Every recent camera is good. The newest ones detect eyes, animals, vehicles. Pleasant, rarely decisive when you are starting.

What you can ignore

Megapixels, unless you print very large or crop heavily.

Maximum advertised sensitivity. The extreme numbers on spec sheets are unusable in practice.

Burst rate, meaning how many frames per second the camera can fire while you hold the shutter down. Unless you photograph sport or birds in flight, you will have no use for it.

Scene modes of the "portrait", "sunset", "fireworks" variety. They pick settings for you and prevent you from understanding which ones.

Very high-resolution video, if you are buying for photography.

The words in this section

A dial*. The small ridged wheel, on the top or the back of the body, that you turn with a thumb or forefinger to change a setting without taking your eye off the viewfinder. How many dials a camera has matters more than you would think.

What no spec sheet will tell you

This is the most neglected piece of advice on the whole list, and probably the most important.

A spec sheet gives you numbers. It will never tell you whether the camera sits well in your hand, whether you can find the button you are reaching for without looking at it, or whether its menus exasperate you after ten minutes. And that is exactly what decides whether you use the thing or leave it in a drawer.

The grip. Hands are not all the same size. A body that sits perfectly in someone else's hand can leave your fingers cramped. The grip is too shallow or too deep, your little finger dangles below it, your thumb rests on a button it presses without meaning to. Nobody can decide that for you, and no online review will do it either.

The menus. You will spend a lot of time in them during the first months, and they differ enormously from one brand to the next. Some are perfectly clear. Others stack submenus organised according to a logic known only to the person who drew them. This is not a detail: a menu that discourages you is a camera that stays in automatic mode.

Where the controls sit. Check that you can reach the important settings with your eye at the viewfinder, without hunting for them.

So go and try it. Twenty minutes in a shop beats twenty opinions online. Pick the camera up with a lens mounted on it, and do exactly this:

Hold it in one hand and see whether the grip fills your palm. Change the sensitivity without taking your eye off the viewfinder. Go into the menu and format a card. Change the autofocus mode. And note whether you had to ask for help with any of those four things.

If there is no shop near you, borrow the camera from someone, or find a video where you actually watch a person move through the menus, rather than a list of specifications read out loud.

A camera cannot be returned because you dislike its menus. You sell it on, and you lose money.

Weight: the criterion you discover too late

The best camera in the world is useless if it stays at home.

It is obvious, and nobody takes it seriously until after they have bought. A heavy body with a big zoom is happily left on the shelf on a Sunday afternoon. A light kit goes out for a walk without a second thought.

I impose that constraint on myself, and not always to my advantage. Before going out I deliberately leave certain lenses at home, the ones I know will not serve the images I have in mind. The bag is lighter and I walk further. But it costs me photographs: a bird going past, an animal too far away, the scene I was not expecting. That is the price of the trade-off, and I am still paying it. Starting with a light camera does not remove it, it simply leaves you room before the bag becomes a burden. Which is one more argument for the versatile zoom: one lens instead of three is one trade-off fewer.

While you are on that same visit, put the strap round your neck. Ask to mount the lens you are considering, because the quoted weight of the body alone means nothing. And ask yourself the only question that matters: will I actually take it with me?

New or used, and how to buy used without being caught out

Buying used is the best way to get a good lens on a modest budget. A camera is a robust piece of machinery, and a well-kept model several years old works perfectly.

I buy used very often myself: two of my three lenses came that way. But you have to inspect the equipment seriously, and get into the habit of asking for the invoices.

Here is what to check.

Shutter count, on a DSLR. Every body has a rated shutter life, often tens or hundreds of thousands of actuations. A serious seller will give you that figure. You can check it yourself: ask for a recent photograph taken with the camera, then drop the file into one of the free websites that read this counter, searching for "shutter count" online. The number is written inside the file without you knowing.

The state of the sensor. Ask for a photograph of a white wall or a plain sky, taken at a narrow aperture, meaning a large f number such as f/16. Dust and scratches show up immediately. Dust can be cleaned, scratches cannot.

The state of the lens elements. Look through the lens towards a light. Look for deep scratches, internal marks, and above all fungus, a filament that grows in humidity and is irreversible.

Mechanical operation. Rings should turn without stiff spots. Autofocus should be decisive and quiet. Every button should respond.

The battery. Batteries wear out. Plan on buying another, they are inexpensive.

The original invoice. Ask for it every time. It proves the equipment is not stolen, it gives you the real purchase date rather than the one the seller quotes, and it matters if any manufacturer warranty is still running.

Where to buy. A specialist used dealer costs a little more than a private seller, but they test the equipment, grade its condition and often include a few months of warranty. For a first purchase, that premium is money well spent.

What should make you walk away: a seller who refuses extra photographs, a price far below the market, a missing original battery or charger, a camera described as "never used" and sold without its box.

The budget, and how to divide it

I am not giving figures, they would be wrong in two years. I am giving proportions, which do not move.

The most common mistake is to put the entire budget into the body and settle for the lens that comes with it. You end up with a very good body behind an ordinary lens, and images that stay ordinary too, without knowing where the problem comes from.

A sensible split for a first purchase: around half in the body, a third in lenses, the rest in the few accessories you genuinely need.

If your budget is truly tight, invert the logic: buy a used body from the previous generation rather than a new one, and keep the difference. It will be useful once you know which lens you are actually missing, which beats committing it blind today.

What you need on day one, and what can wait

Essential immediately

A memory card from a known brand. Buy it from a serious retailer: counterfeits are common online and show up as corrupted files. A medium-capacity fast card beats an enormous slow one. The speed is printed on the card: the higher it is, the less the camera stalls after a run of pictures.

A second battery. Especially on a mirrorless camera. It is the one accessory that will stop you going home frustrated.

A computer recent enough to develop your images. This is the expense everyone leaves out of the budget. Editing software is demanding and grows more so with every version: Adobe recommends twelve gigabytes of memory for Lightroom, three times its own stated minimum. A ten-year-old machine will open your RAW files, but every adjustment will keep you waiting, and you will end up not developing them at all. Memory and a fast drive matter more than processor power, and a decent screen matters just as much, since that is what tells you whether the colours have drifted.

A way to back up your images. An external drive or an online service. Memory cards fail without warning, and they fill up fast.

What can wait

A tripod. Useful for long exposures, meaning shots where the shutter stays open for several seconds to gather scarce light or smooth the movement of water. Unnecessary in your first months. And a cheap tripod is worse than none at all: it vibrates.

Filters. A polariser, a piece of glass you screw onto the front of the lens and rotate to cut reflections off water and foliage, has a real use, but later. The "protective" filter sold to you at the till puts a piece of glass of unknown quality in front of your lens.

An external flash. A world of its own, to be approached once the rest is in place.

A bag. A bag you already own, with a little padding, does the job perfectly at the start.

A second lens, before you have genuinely exhausted the first.

How to decide, concretely

Answer these five questions in order and the answer will appear.

1. What will I photograph most often? Landscapes, people, animals, street scenes, my children? This determines the focal length you need, therefore the lens, therefore the budget.

2. Where and when will I be shooting? Outdoors in daylight, good light covers almost everything. Indoors or in the evening, you need sensor area and a bright lens.

3. What weight am I willing to carry on my shoulder all day? Answer with a real outing in mind, not the idea you have of one. A kit that is too heavy ends up on a shelf, and that is the one flaw no amount of image quality makes up for.

4. What is my total budget, lens included? Total, not the body alone. This is the most common trap: people compare body prices and forget that a decent lens often costs as much. Set one overall figure, then divide it, rather than the other way round.

5. Do I want to understand, or do I want the camera to decide? If you want to understand, favour accessible dials and accept a less recent body. And know that the body will teach you nothing on its own: that is exactly what my course covers.

With those five answers, walk into a shop or open a comparison site. You will no longer be lost, because you will know what you are looking for.

The first things to do once you have it

If you bought it used, start with a factory reset. The settings menu has a reset option. You have no idea what the previous owner switched on or off, and some settings sit deep enough that you could spend days wondering why the camera does not behave as it should. Do it before anything else, since a reset also clears the date and time.

Format the card in the camera, not on the computer. Formatting means erasing and preparing the card, and the camera does it in the exact format it expects, which prevents a great many reading errors later. The option sits in the settings menu.

Set the date and time. They will help you find your images for years.

Record RAW* alongside JPEG if the camera allows it. RAW keeps all the information and will let you fix your mistakes later, once you know how.

Open the manual once, only to find where the shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity settings live. The rest will come.

Plan on leaving automatic mode. Not on the first day, but know that this is where the door is. As long as the camera decides for you, you will not know why an image works. My course is written for that moment.

The words in this section

RAW*. A file format that keeps all the raw data the sensor recorded, unlike JPEG which compresses it and makes decisions on your behalf. A RAW file is heavier, flatter on screen, and vastly more flexible to work on afterwards.

What this article does not replace

You now know how to choose. You do not yet know how to photograph, and that is normal, they are two different things.

Equipment dominates conversations about photography because it is easy to compare. What actually separates two images compares far less easily: exposure, focus, depth of field, light and composition. No camera will hand you those.

The camera matters less than the light, less than you, and less than the lens.

Buy mirrorless if you are buying new, a DSLR if you are buying used on a tight budget.

Look at APS-C before dreaming of full frame.
